Advancing Cybersecurity in Healthcare: MDCG2019-16 Cluster Webinar Recap

On November 27th, 2024, the MDCG2019-16 cluster hosted a webinar titled “Advancing Cybersecurity in Healthcare“. This event brought together experts from five collaborative projects: CYLCOMED, CYMEDSEC, ENTRUST, MEDSECURANCE, and NEMECYS. Organized by CYLCOMED and led by Giada Martello from MARTEL INNOVATE, the webinar served as a platform to share project goals, methodologies, and initial findings, all aimed at promoting cybersecurity in healthcare.

The webinar opened with a discussion on CYLCOMED’s mission to develop a robust cybersecurity framework for connected medical devices. This was followed by insights from CYMEDSEC, which focused on boosting the security of networked medical devices within healthcare infrastructures, emphasizing seamless integration with hospital networks and ensuring data integrity.

MEDSECURANCE further explored the intersection of security and safety for medical IoT devices, addressing challenges of interoperability, dependability, and trust in complex medical environments. Each project presented its unique methodologies, initial results, and tools, highlighting their collective goal of promoting cybersecurity in healthcare systems.

NEMECYS Contributions

The NEMECYS project was presented by Christos Androutsos, Software Engineer at the University of Ioannina, Greece, under the title “NEMECYS: Enhancing Cybersecurity in Connected Medical Devices“. The presentation highlighted:

    • Findings from a comprehensive literature review conducted under Work Package 1 related to best practices and guidelines.
    • Detailed overviews of the cybersecurity tools developed by NEMECYS, along with their specific functionalities.
    • Real-world case studies and scenarios that are validating these tools.
    • The application of the MDCG 2019-16 assessment methodology for feedback collection.

While Christos led the presentation, Nektaria Kaloudi, the Tool Development Leader, was present to address any specific questions related to the development of the NEMECYS cybersecurity tools.

This webinar successfully showcased the cluster’s collective efforts to advance healthcare cybersecurity and the distinct contributions of each project.
